Day one

Our journey began with a redeye flight that tested our resilience in the face of strong winds. As our plane circled before landing, we couldn't help but feel the pulse of anticipation for the adventures that awaited us. Unfortunately, many other flights were canceled due to the challenging weather conditions, setting a unique tone for our arrival.

With the overnight flight leaving us sleep-deprived, we dropped our luggage off at our cozy AirBnB and sought solace in a nearby park. Underneath the vast expanse of the sky, we found respite on the grass, soaking in the tranquil surroundings and stealing moments of rest amidst nature's embrace. Having enjoyed a quick drink, we surrendered to a peaceful nap, rejuvenating our spirits for the days ahead.

Day two

Refreshed and ready for exploration, we embarked on day two with a delightful lunch in Sé - at a fantastic garden restaurant with a cage full of cockatiels and other birds - before setting off to experience the renowned cable car ride, known as the teleférico, to Monte Palace. Ascending to breathtaking heights, we were rewarded with panoramic views of Madeira's verdant landscapes, lush gardens, and azure ocean.

Stepping into the whimsical wonderland of Monte Palace's botanical gardens, we found ourselves amidst a treasure trove of exotic flora. Strolling through vibrant pathways adorned with colorful blooms and intricate sculptures, we were transported to a world of natural beauty and serenity. Opting out of the wicker sleds, we descended back down in the cable car, cherishing the memories we had created.

As the evening unfolded, we walked around old town, strolling down the street of painted doors. Afterwards we sought the comforts of a Poncha bar, indulging in the island's signature drink made with honey, sugar and alcohol. With the gentle caress of the pleasant weather accompanying our conversations, we relished in the simplicity of the moment, embracing the joys of Madeira's vibrant culture.

Day three

Immersing ourselves in the exploration of Madeira's west side, we embarked on a guided tour offered by Hit The Road Madeira on the third day. Led by the experienced guide, Hugo, our journey unveiled captivating scenic viewpoints that left us in awe of the island's natural wonders.

Paredao, with its majestic cliffs towering above the clouds, captivated our senses and offered a glimpse into the raw power of nature. Pico do Arieiro, the third-highest peak on the island, granted us breathtaking vistas of sprawling valleys and jagged mountain peaks, reminding us of the island's dramatic topography.

For lunch, we were treated to the flavors of Madeira at a quinta in Santana. Indulging in espetada, a traditional dish of succulent grilled meat skewers, we savored the rich flavors that paid homage to the island's culinary heritage. Accompanied by Poncha at Bar Zeta, we immersed ourselves in the lively atmosphere and shared laughter with newfound friends.

After lunch, we drove to the Santana Old House. Santana is a beautiful village with traditional Madeiran architecture.

Our adventure continued as we ventured to the Faial skywalks, an elevated experience, allowing us to tread upon suspended paths, seemingly floating above the ocean. With each step, we marveled at the sheer beauty that surrounded us.

We then drove to Ponta do Rosto, where the azure ocean stretched infinitely before us, merging with the endless sky. On a clearer day, we would've seen the nearby island of Porto Santo.

It was during this immersive tour that our guide convinced me of the convenience and freedom a rental car would provide for the remainder of our trip. Embracing the newfound sense of adventure, I eagerly arranged for a rental car, ready to traverse the island's hidden corners and discover its best-kept secrets.

As our journey through Madeira's captivating landscapes unfolded, we found ourselves enchanted by its diverse offerings. From battling winds and surrendering to serenity on day one to exploring botanical gardens, indulging in Poncha pleasures, making new friends and embracing guided tours on days two and three, each moment revealed a new layer of the island's allure.

With each passing day, Madeira unveiled its treasures—be it the soaring peaks, the dramatic cliffs, or the serenity of botanical havens. And with the freedom of a rental car beckoning us to embark on new adventures, we eagerly awaited the next leg of our remarkable journey, ready to embrace the beauty that awaited us.

Day four

Our fourth day began with an exhilarating ride in a Bolt to the airport, where we collected our rental car. Eager to immerse ourselves in the island's scenic beauty, we embarked on a leisurely drive along the southern coast, stopping at various viewpoints along the way. Each vista seemed more mesmerizing than the last, as Madeira's mountains gracefully met the glistening ocean.

We stopped briefly in Calheta to see one of the only sandy beaches on the island. A beautiful town with the ocean on one side and cliffs on the other.

For lunch, we found ourselves at a mountain-top restaurant in Calheta, offering panoramic views of the vast ocean expanse. As we savored the delectable cuisine, we were treated to a captivating sight—paragliders soaring through the sky above a nearby runway. It was a spectacle that perfectly encapsulated the harmonious blend of nature and adventure that defines Madeira.

Continuing our journey, we wound our way through the coastal roads until we reached Porto Moniz, where the Sea View Restaurant at Natura Bay awaited us for a delightful dinner. Nestled amidst the picturesque beauty of the ocean and the natural pools, the restaurant provided an idyllic backdrop for a memorable evening.

Day five

On the fifth day, we made our way to Fanal, where we embarked on a hike through the enchanting plateau, a magical forest characterized by dense vegetation and towering trees. The mist added an air of mystery and tranquility, making the experience truly captivating. The mystical mist that enveloped the landscape added an ethereal touch to our adventure.

After immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of Fanal, we set off for Seixal to explore the island's famed black sandy beaches. Along the way, we stumbled upon the Talho butcher, a unique culinary experience where we indulged in the joy of grilling our own meat over burning coals. The flavors mingled with the salty ocean breeze, creating an unforgettable feast for the senses.

Eager to delve deeper into Madeira's rich history, we visited the ruins of Sao Jorge before returning to Porto Moniz, where we indulged in the sunny weather and savored refreshing Poncha by the ocean. The blend of local flavors and the soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore created a moment of pure bliss.

Day six

Our sixth day was dedicated to exploring the scenic wonders that lay along the roads less traveled. Taking the long route to Ribiera Brava, we found ourselves captivated by numerous viewpoints that showcased the island's dramatic landscapes in all their glory. Each stop offered a new perspective, leaving us in awe of Madeira's raw and untamed beauty.

After a day of discovery, we returned to Porto Moniz, where we relished in the serenity of the oceanside. With a refreshing drink in hand, we marveled at the hues of the setting sun as it painted the sky with an array of vibrant colors. It was a moment of pure tranquility, etching itself into our memories.

Day seven

Day seven dawned with a journey to the North Mills Distillery and Henrique & Henrique, where we embarked on captivating tours and tastings. Immersing ourselves in the art of Madeira's famous wines, we indulged in a sensory exploration, savoring the rich flavors and uncovering the intricacies of this esteemed local tradition.

En route, we made a delightful stop in Camara de Lobos, a picturesque village where Winston Churchill found inspiration for his artwork. We visited Churchill's Place restaurant, basking in the ambiance that had captured the renowned statesman's imagination. The culinary delights paired with the captivating coastal views left us with a deep appreciation for the fusion of culture and nature that defines Madeira.

Returning once again to Porto Moniz, we relished in the timeless pleasure of Poncha. As we raised our glasses, toasting to the island's beauty, we felt a sense of gratitude for the remarkable experiences we had encountered thus far.

Day eight

The eighth day brought with it unexpected twists and turns. As we bid farewell to the island, we made a brief stop in Lido for lunch before heading to the airport to return our rental car. However, fate had other plans, as we learned that all flights were being canceled due to strong winds diverting incoming planes.

Patiently enduring the uncertainty, we waited in line for hours, until the airline representatives directed us to a bus that would transport us to the luxurious Eden Mar hotel. Surprised and grateful for the unforeseen turn of events, we enjoyed a complimentary dinner and a restful night's sleep, knowing that the journey was not yet complete.

Day nine

With a renewed sense of excitement, we awoke on the ninth day, eager to continue our journey back home. Boarding the flight with ease, we bid farewell to the idyllic island of Madeira, cherishing the memories and experiences that had woven their way into our hearts.

Conclusion: A Timeless Treasure to Revisit

Madeira, with its majestic mountains, lush forests, and breathtaking ocean views, proved to be an enchanting paradise waiting to be explored.
